Black Lion Barn Retreat Reviews

Anthony
The Black Lion Retreat Barn was everything we expected, it was an excellent place to celebrate a friends 70th birthday. The accommodation was clean, modern and well equipt for self catering, we had everything that we needed. The location was spectacular, with great views out of the windows.
Lesley
Absolutely fantastic accommodation. Black Lion Barn is a wonderful place to stay for a large family or group celebration. The accommodation is very spacious and is very well equipped with everything you would need for a home from home time away. The barn was lovely and clean and comfortable in every way.
Our family of 10 really enjoyed our time at the Black Lion Barn, the house has everything we needed and more, with stunning views across the Shropshire countryside. A great base to visit Shrewsbury, Church Stretton and the Shropshire hills. The Table Tennis table in the downstairs family room was brilliant for keeping everyone active and entertained. It should be mentioned in the description of the house. The upstairs loungekitchendining room was also a great family space.
The Black Lion Barn Retreat is a very well equipped rental with great views of the countryside. Although next to a farm, there was very little noise and no farmyard smell. The owners could not be more helpful. The quality of the bed linen, towels and all the facilities was very high. There are lovely local walks and the downstairs yoga room was a great playroom for the youngsters and for the adults to socialise. We used the barn as a base for a family wedding which was held nearby. It allowed several branches of our family to get together before and recover after the big day.
We had a wonderful week. The accommodation was very well equipped and comfortable. The space was perfect for 3 generations to spread out and be together. Very child friendly... the owner happily providing 2 cots, 2 high chairs and fitting a stair gate for us. And the space downstairs for lively 7 and 9 year olds was a great place to play. We had a wet week so it was used a lot! There was very little outside space for children to play but we did use the BBQ. It was easy to message the owner with any questionsissues we had and she was quick to respond. I'm sorry we didn't get to meet she sounded lovely. It was comforting to see a lot of attention was paid to fire safety but it was a bit distracting to have green lighting in the bedrooms. Thankyou for a lovely stay.
Our stay at the Black Lion Barn Retreat was fantastic. We couldn't fault anything and we were made to feel very welcome by the owners. It's an ideal venue for a group of people wishing to stay in Shropshire.
Elizabeth Ann
The owner was lovely, contacted us in advance re the beds and anything we asked for was accommodated. The barn was immaculate and really well equipped, anything we needed was there. We had lovely walks from the house its a really nice area to walk around. Thank you Iona and crew.
Felicity

Superb stay for a family and friends weekend. The space was fantastic and worked well for 4 generations. Highly recommended.
Andrew
I hire a house every year for me and my friends for my birthday to get away from husbands, kids and dogs. Just a weekend of laughter, games, drinks and memories. BEST HOUSE YET!!!!!!
We have visited Black Lion Barn Retreat several times and yet again we were not disappointed. We all had an amazing time celebrating my parents 60th wedding anniversary, 4 generations aged from 81yrs 4yrs. The barn is fabulous and in a beautiful location. Could not fault it, everyone of us loved the weekend and didnt want to leave. The owners Iona & Dan are more than helpful and very accommodating. Would highly recommend staying here and will definitely be back again. Thank You for a wonderful stay
Cottage was lovely and clean and very spacious. Good Communication with the host. Could have done with a bigger cooker for the size of the cottage.
Lilian
The property was spacious, clean and well equipped for a large group. We were provided with lots of useful information about the area and it was ideal for keen walkers.
Francesca
We loved our stay at Black Lion Barn! The attention to detail was spot on and we absolutely loved the farmhouse style, large space downstairs, and open plan living area and kitchen. Iona was so friendly, responsive and kind. We've already booked to come back in November.
Lauren
Beautiful house, perfect size for our family Holiday. The house is well equipped had everything we needed for our stay and very clean. The beds was really comfortable and the rooms a perfect size. Lovely location and great countryside views. Great communication with the owners too.
As a party of 13 made up of 6 adults and 7 children aged between 18 months and 15 years we had a tremendous time. Property very spacious, clean and well equipped. Beds very comfortable and games room was loved by all. With table tennis, table football, large TV, and loads of room for which older girls could practice their gymnastics and dancing. Grandson set up a table tennis tournament for us. Owners Iona and Dan. Kept us well informed.
Beautiful barn with yoga studio downstairs . Magnificent country views. Log wood burner , reclining settees and large dining table so we could all sit together at mealtimes . Uncluttered property with lots of good basics like towels , hairdryers , washing up liquid, coffee etc. There are 6 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms with options for a bath or walk in shower . The beds were especially comfortable and large and outside there is a nice seating area that catches the sun. Well placed for country walks and a couple of nice country pubs . Just a short drive to Shrewsbury. We had a really wonderful time with great communication from the owner Iona who has clearly put a lot o.f thought into the conversion of this barn .. Perfect for large families or groups of friends wanting a relaxing getaway . Table tennis and games available for the kids . Thoroughly recommend and hope to return .
Excellent property, great location. Plenty of walks direct from cottage and a couple of pubs within walking distance. Owner very responsive to anyqueries. Would definitely recommend.
Rachel
We had a lovely weekend away with friends, the barn was very clean and catered very well for teenagers and adults alike. The location is beautiful.
We have been going away at Easter for 10 years now 3 generations five adults, and four children aged 10 12 and Black Lion Barn Retreat is by far the best cottage we have ever stayed in. It is huge, beautiful and spotlessly clean! The open plan loungedining areakitchen is brilliant perfect for chatting, relaxing, cooking, playing games and enjoying the gorgeous view from the floortoceiling windows. The games room downstairs was absolutely perfect for the four children with table tennis, table football, bean bags, a tv and a few other foam gamesactivities exactly what the children wanted after a day out exploring the local area. There are loads of local attractions to keep you busy as well as National Trust places and very local walks. Iona was a perfect host emailing in advance as well as during our stay and also leaving a welcome gift for when we arrived. I cannot recommend this cottage highly enough.
Gillian
We have been renting cottagesbarns for many years mainly with our children and now with our childrens families . Nine of us stayed at Black Lion Barn and it suited all ages . The grandchildren particularly loved the yoga games studio . Table tennis tournaments everyday! Perfect place to go walking locally and not far to go longer walks in the Shropshire hills. The Barn is extremely clean and very comfortable. Beds and bedding a very high standard . Plenty of bathrooms for a large group . We didnt need to contact the owners about anything as it was just perfect . The best rental for us up to date . This is what a good rental is all about !!
This is our second visit to Black Lion Barn. . its fabulous. Three generations together, plenty of space for the grandchildren, excellent comfort levels and great facilities., Cant fault it.
Amanda
Fabulous property. Spotlessly clean. The bedrooms are stylish and beds extremely comfortable. We loved the open plan sittingdiningkitchen with plenty of seating for the 8 of us that enabled us to be preparing supper and still be able to chat. Everything you needed in the kitchen and more even a nutmeg grater! Made use of the beautiful room downstairs where table tennis and table football played. So much to do in the area with stunning walks and great pubs. Cant wait to come back, thank you Iona for being so welcoming and helpful.
Henrietta
We had a fantastic weekend. The Barn was exceptional, so much space , very clean , great location and fantastic communication with the owners.I would definitely recommend this property and would happily stay in the future. I would say it is one of the best self catering properties we have ever stayed in. Thank you Iona
Richard
Perfect holiday retreat for a large 3 generation family comprising of 6 adults and 5 children aged from 19 months to 10 years. Iona and Dan were fabulous hosts, very friendly and informative. The area is set within a farming community with a couple of local public houses. The children loved seeing the cows in the fields, opposite the barn. Parking is great we had 3 vehicles but there was room for more. One thing to be aware of is that the roads in the immediate vicinity are typical narrow country roads but once you are clear there are main roads with access to Shrewsbury, Ludlow and historic towns such as Ironbridge with its numerous museums, Bliss Hill a 'restored' 1900 village is well worth a visit. As a family, we holiday for a week every year and everyone agreed that this was the best locationproperty yet and there were a few tears when the time came to leave. We'd love to spend Christmas there but unfortunately they're booked for the next two years, still there is 2025...
Had an amazing stay to celebrate my Dads 80th birthday and my Mums birthday. Beautiful accommodation in a beautiful part of the country. We couldnt have asked for more, will definitely be back and would definitely recommend to others. Thanks for the memories.
Jennifer
We had a great time at the black lion barn retreat. It is in a beautiful location with views of the countryside. The barn is very comfortable and extremely well presented. The yoga studio is a really great space for games and we enjoyed the table tennis table in there. The living space is large and open which was great for a large group and felt very sociable. The hosts were very helpful and understanding when we set the smoke alarms off coking bacon! They were easily contactable before our stay and again understanding when we had to add a baby to our booking at the last minute. Overall I would highly recommend black lion retreat barn and would definitely consider coming back with families or friends.
Jacqueline
Black Lion Barn is a thoughtfully wellequipped property in a beautiful setting. We had everything we needed for our stay, the owners were very helpful and we would not hesitate to recommend the barn to others.
Katherine
Thank you for a wonderful weekend away, we loved the huge space of the barn and the beautiful views from the windows. The reclining chairs were a huge hit with all generations of our family too
Had everything we needed for our weekend away. Really enjoyed the table tennis and table football tables. Also loved the the large dinning room table as it meant we could all sit and have group meals together. Would definitely stay again. The kitchen was well equipped with everything we needed and Iona the host was very accommodating during our stay. Thank you
Black Lion Barn is amazing, as are hosts Iona and Dan. The Barn is stunning and every last detail is catered for, and its the little details that count. Tea, coffee, logs for the burner, all the kitchen essentials all you need is food, drink and walking boots. Couldnt recommend it enough. 12 of us in the party, 3 families with kids from 1014. Table football, ping pong and room full of bean bags kept them entertained and we all had an amazing time. Thank you
Barbara
Absolutely first class, everything you could possibly want was available, equipped to a very high standard. Extremely clean, warm, cosy, comfortable accommodation. Family of 10 and Black Lion Barn suited all our ages. Hosts are fantastic. Can't wait to stay again.
Teresa
The barn was great for a big family get together. Plenty of space but still cosy and homely, spotlessly clean and with all the home comforts. Beds were really comfortable and had good quality bedding which makes all the difference. Location was stunning with beautiful views and walks on the doorstep. I have stayed in a lot of holiday rentals, this is one of the best.
We had a fantastic stay in this beautiful property. The facilities were second to none and it was perfect for our large family celebration with the yoga studiogames room a perfect place for the kids to play. The owners were incredibly friendly and helpful both in the lead up to our stay and throughout. Will definitely return.
Great property! Three generations together in a fabulous barn conversion. So much space for the children, superb level of comfort, plenty of bathrooms and toasty warm. I would highly recommend this property .
Stephen
Black Lion Barn is a great place for a family celebration. We had plenty of space to celebrate an 80th birthday with close family and all the facilities to cater for large family dinners. Our teenage kids and some of the adults thoroughly enjoyed having table tennis and table football in their own TV room. The barn is kept to a high standard and set in a beautiful location. We also found plenty to do in Shropshire and said we would love to go back.
Excellent property for a get together for 23 families. Huge games room downstairs for the children to let off steam. Comfortable lounge and dining area. Lots of activities within 30 mins by car. Highly recommended.
An excellent facility for a family reunion. Very spacious and wellequipped. Good location for a number of attractions and lots of local walks. Local pub 1 mile friendly with good pub food. Restaurants a few miles away. Highly recommended.
Rachel
We had a great weekend at the Barn. Our group of 11 had plenty of space to chill and play. The views from the living room are stunning and its so easy to lose time enjoying it. The Barn is so well equipped, we had everything and more than needed to do a Sunday roast and pudding and I loved having everyone sitting around the table together. The beds were comfy and the showers were brilliant, very powerful and hot! Theres so much to do in the area making the Barn the perfect place to go for an active or relaxing holiday, thank you Iona for making our weekend perfect.
Rebecca
One of the best holiday cottages I have stayed in by far. Had everything and more. Host was extremely helpful and responded quickly. Cant wait to come back
