Columbine Barn, Bradwell

We recently stayed here and, unfortunately, we came away very disappointed. On arrival, the property already showed signs of poor maintenance. There were water stains on the ceiling as you enter the property. The fridge had a broken door shelf, meaning something as basic as a bottle of milk couldnt be stored properly. The toaster handle was broken, and the kettle appeared to be deteriorating, with pieces of plastic breaking away from the base and floating in the water every time it was boiled. The bathroom also had a strong drain smell throughout our stay. It was unpleasant enough that we ended up sleeping with the windows open to try to reduce the odour. The shower head also continually dripped after use, even when the controls were turned fully off. Rather than feeling welcoming and relaxing, the property felt quite restrictive. There were notices in capital letters throughout the barn telling guests what they could and couldnt do, and even the thermostat was locked so we couldnt adjust the temperature ourselves or even just check it was switched off as it was so hot. The customer experience also fell well short of what weve come to expect from holiday accommodation. Other places weve stayed have included thoughtful touches such as a welcome basket, local maps or uptodate recommendations for places to visit. Here, there was nothing to make us feel welcomed, and the only information available was a selection of outdated leaflets that appeared to be several years old. The kitchen facilities also werent adequate for a property advertised to sleep eight people. The undercounter fridge, with a small freezer compartment taking up much of the space, simply wasnt large enough. We struggled to fit in food for our small family, so its difficult to imagine how it would cope with eight guests. We spent as little time in the barn as possible, using it purely as somewhere to sleep before heading back out each day. For the price we paid, we expected a comfortable, wellmaintained place where we could actually relax in the evenings and feel at home. Instead, it felt tired, poorly maintained and lacking the little touches that make a holiday property welcoming. Its a shame, because the location itself is lovely, but until the maintenance issues are addressed and the guest experience is improved, I dont feel the accommodation offers value for money.

Great place. Feels like you're in the middle of nowhere, yet only a few mins walk into Bradwell. Parked up for a long weekend and never used the car until we left. If you like a stunning scenic walk before a pub lunch then this is an ideal location.

Thank you Jess for a lovely stay at Columbine. It suited our needs perfectly. Quiet, near to the pubshops, comfy beds and dog friendly. Plenty of great walks from the door step and only a short drive to many of the must see places in The Peaks. We will be back.

Loved our stay thank you! Clean, tidy & well equipped. Could have done with an extra bathroom with their being 7 of us staying but apart from that fab. Highly recommend.

I booked this cottage with 5 friends and we had an absolute blast! Quiet and accessible location, decently sized, clean, and very comfortable. The property is small, but it packs in all the usual home comforts the heated floor was a lovley bonus in winter. We would definitly consider returning.

What a lovely place to stay. We had a slight hiccup with the weather causing a power cut which was not an issue as the owners were very helpful even though they could do nothing about. Once the power was back on we had a lovely time. Would definitely recommend but not during a storm.

I cannot praise this holiday high enough. The Columbine barn was perfect clean beds were comfortable obviously maintained well. My grandchildren loved it when the cows came down from the next field and the views were lovely. Its also in easy reach of so many things Castleton and the caves which the kids loved. This is a 1010 accommodation and I would go back

Beautiful little cottage, really enjoyed our stay. Great central location for surrounding areas to visit. Cottage clean and perfect for tranquility. Owner, Jess was so helpful and thoughtful. Cottage felt like we were in the middle of no where but shop and pub just up the road. Would recommend this cottage to everyone and we will return as couldn't fault it in any way. Such a stunning location! And a very comfortable little cottage we adored our stay. The highlight was sitting outside on an early summers evening listening to the incredible birdsong. It really felt like we were right in the middle of the country, despite being an easy walk from the village pub and coop. My children have already asked when we can stay again they loved visiting the ponies in the field beyond.

I very rarely leave reviews but in this instance I wanted to express my dissatifaction with our recent stay at Columbine Barn, which was completely unacceptable due to the negligence of the owner. The most serious issue was the lack of heating and hot water, which was entirely preventable and caused significant discomfort throughout our stay. This was due to the owner's failure to refill the oil, demonstrating a clear disregard for the basic needs of guests. Additionally, the property was in a filthy state upon our arrival. The level of cleanliness was far below an acceptable standard, and it was evident that little to no effort had been made to ensure a hygienic and welcoming environment. Further compounding the safety concerns, we discovered that the upstairs smoke alarm was not only broken but had been deliberately placed under the stairs rather than being repaired or replaced. This is a serious safety hazard and raises significant concerns about the general upkeep of the property. Cobwebs everywhere with no cleaning of flooring and carpeted areas. Filthy stains on the ceilings due to leaks constantly. Another major issue was that the fridge had been switched off at the mains prior to our arrival. As a result, the milk left for us had spoiled, causing an unbearable smell throughout the downstairs area. This lack of attention to detail and basic hospitality further contributed to our overall negative experience. The owners offer of 50 in compensation is an insult given the extent of the issues we faced. We were forced to endure a stay without essential amenities, in an unclean and unsafe environment, which completely ruined our experience. Also, my 5yearold son has severe asthma and being in a cold environment can have serious health implications and exacerbate his condition. The owner and Sykes Cottages have broken their contract to us due to being unable to provide basic amenities as listed at the point of purchase and throughout our stay. The place was unsafe and not fit for purpose as advertised, DO NOT STAY HERE! Also the neighbouring lockup had a constant fire from morning till night burning all sorts of items that gave off a ridiculous amount of fumes and smoke! AVOID AVOID AVOID

A lovely cosy barn which we thoroughly enjoyed staying in a second time and look forward to our third stay!

Excellent location for traveling to main places. quite , comfortable good facilities ,parking bit off an issue at night to get out so left van at end of road. will be going again. nice pub food at end of road. Loved it will be booking again.

We had an excellent stay at Columbine Barn. It was perfectly situated for us as we have family close by and very nervous dogs, so staying bonfire week was perfect for us. The barn was very well equipped and comfortable and the underfloor heating was amazing, really toasty on a cold day. The bedrooms were sufficient for our needs with lovely quality bedding and pillows. A 5 minute walk got us to the local village with all the amenities you would need. We can highly recommend Brook Cafe and Bradwell Fisheries. Columbine Barn is definitely one for us to return to. Thank you to Jess, the owner for looking after us. Xxx

Our booking experience with Sykes was truly terrible. We booked a week at Columbine to be informed by the owner that part of the week had been double booked and that we could only have the property until Weds. Sykes had obviously taken full payment for the week and at that point I asked for prices to check out on TuesdayWednesday. I asked multiple times only to find that the booking had been made for a Wednesday check out. There was no response to my simple requests. It was obviously extremely frustrating to deal with a complete lack of regard for the customer especially as I felt we had been more than accommodating in dealing with their booking mishap. The property itself is beautifully situated and we were blessed with almost perfect weather. My children loved feeding the horses and playing pooh sticks in the river. But that's where it ended re the house for us. The house itself was small, cramped and pretty grubby in all honesty. I would say it would be great for a family of four who are out walking all day, but to put 8 people in there which appears to be the maximum number of beds there were 6 of us then it's a tall order given the bathroom is tiny and pretty grubby ie dirty tiles, rusted bin and toilet holder given the lack of ventilation. On top there is very little hanging space for towels some broken bathroom hooks. There are hooks in the rooms, but they were situated over the bedbedside table, which was just odd. There is no working light outside the house it flashes on but then cuts out so ensure you have a torch. A broken fridge and broken airer not ideal when you're airing your walking stuff would be easy fixes. I echo the comments re heating whilst it was sunny in the day, it was cold at night and whilst the owner was responsive, it wasn't ideal to be coming back to a cold house and having to message to get the heating on. I also echo the comments about parking it was a pain to manouvre out of the property along a single track and especially so in the dark. Can only speak as I find and for us, this was not a stay we would recommend both from the perspective of the inept service provided by Sykes as well as the many deficiencies at the property.

Where do I start? From before we arrived the communication with Jess was quick and friendly and we arrived to little welcome pack of biscuits treats for my dogs and fresh flowers in the vase. Our stay was above and beyond what i was expecting. The shower pressure was decent and hot water, the barn was always at rhe perfect temp so much easier letting jess know our preference of heating temps than me messing around trying to figure out the thermostat The barn was clean welcoming and the bedding was so comfy too. We weren't bothered by anyone as it's isolated but not too isolated as village was less than 6 minutes away walking. We loved warching the horses and foal in the field and to make it even more perfect a hikingwalking route was near the barn through an adjacent field. We will most definitely be back and the garden area was great for my 2 small dogs. We stayed a week yet 3 of those days we were discovering more walkinghiking routes in Bradwell itself that were beautiful views. So much to see and do a week wasn't long enough.

Beautiful property and location. We did not realise though that every time you want the underfloor heating on you have to contact the owner. When the evening temperature is 10 degrees it needs to be on. We was cold most nights even though we left voice mail on owners phone to put it on.

Access and parking needs to be better described, having taken two cars moving them was tricky as nowhere to turn and very muddy. Got stuck in the mud at one point! Need more gravel down. Otherwise a lovely property, good location in edge of village. Lots to do in the area.

Absolutely loved staying here for a weekend, very clean and spacious property with plenty of room to cook and chill together downstairs. Only feedback Id give would be another toiletbathroom space due to how many it sleeps and better parking.

We had a lovely holiday at Columbine Barn. We really appreciated the underfloor heating when we came back from a day out. The cottage is tastefully decorated with very comfortable beds and sofa. The cottage is in an excellent central location for exploring the Peaks. You feel that you are isolated but the village of Bradwell is only a very short distance away. The outside of the cottage is beautiful and peaceful with a lovely picnic table. The owner Jess is really friendly and is quick to respond to any request we had. We will be back in the future.

Delightful cottage in an absolutely superb location. Bradwell is a perfect and friendly base for exploring the Peaks. Cottage is comfortable and an incredibly relaxing environment. The heating came on at exactly the right timetemperature without any prompting. Very much appreciated

Columbine Barn is a lovely cottage in a perfect location super easy access to some amazing walks, as well as pubs and groceries. The cottage has a stair gate which made it super easy to keep our dogs downstairs other cottages we stayed in didn't have one and it was difficult, comfortable beds, lovely living room area with kitchen, and enclosed garden.

A well appointed property in a unique location, quiet isolation guaranteed. The freezer hidden away in the understairs cupboard was not immediately evident, but found eventually. A small shelf for toiletries in the bathroom would have been welcome. Care must be taken on the final track approaching the barn, it is quite rough and low cars can bottom out in places, mine did. Still pleased with our stay and would definitely rebook.

Warm and cosy, great location, this was our second stay here and we will return.

Great stay, would recommend

Lovely and comfortable even with 4 adults and 4 children. The beds were comfortable and the living area and kitchen were a decent size. Facilities were excellent. The freezer is hidden in the closet Owners very helpful if needed and prompt at replying. The view is absolutely stunning and Bradwell is a lovely village with everything you could need and some really good walks near by. Would highly recommend!

Needs discreet signage put up every 3050meters getting into the barn area to get in from the street, showing that this is the correct way to Columbine barn, or a clearly marked Google Maps screenshot with bright red route highlighted, or clear day night time photos of landmarks leading to the barn just to make it extremely easy. Needs more toilet paper given by default in the property we only had 1 roll given Need to WD40 the doors, locks so they don't creak as much in the night and sand down the bathroom door slightly so that it doesn't wake everyone in the property up when going inout Possibly WiFi info sheet checkout info sheet in the bedrooms too These would all be helpful in our case but all pretty minor, was a great stay and very appreciated.
